The Marie Curie Outgoing International Fellowship (MC OIF) is a new measure within the 6th Framework Programme for R&D by the EU. Here are some details on Marie Curie measures in general.
The revolutionary thing about MC OIF in particular is twofold: 1) Researchers may now visit host institutions anywhere in the world, i.e. beyond the boundaries of the EU and 2) to implement the philisophy of lifelong learning, age restrictions have been dropped. Decision of funding is now solely based on scientific merit.
The MC OIF consists of two periods, the outgoing phase and the re-integration phase back in Europe. Both are funded by the fellowship.
My approved proposal includes visiting UC Davis in California, USA, for two years under the supervision of Donald Turcotte and John Rundle and a one-year re-integration phase back in Kiel. The scientist in charge of the whole fellowship is Wolfgang Rabbel.
Here is the abstract of my proposal QUAKEPHYS.
The fellowship will most probably commence on July 1st, 2005.
Currently, I am in the process of bringing together requirements and regulations of 1) the EU 2) Germany 3) the USA 4) Kiel University. This involves scientific and legal aspects as diverse as working contracts, health insurance, social insurance, visa, taxes, ... you name it. A very "interesting" experience! The European Commission services in Brussels have been most helpful so far (not meant ironically). If I find time (and don't loose my sense of humour), I will post an apostil on all my OIF-related experiences during preparation later... stay tuned.
